Our Heavenly Destination
Why Heaven is open to all who want it, and every Christian should pray that Hell is empty.
There’s always been a strange idea floating around in Christianity that some souls deserve damnation, as if God’s mercy has limits or that heaven would be less holy if it included certain people. But if we take the Gospel seriously, it should be the will of every Christian that everyone makes it into heaven—every soul, no matter how lost, broken, or infuriating we find them.
Faith doesn’t end when church breaks your heart. Faith After Church Hurt helps you rediscover Jesus beyond the walls that wounded you. Healing is possible, and faith still has a home.
No one is beyond redemption. Ever. All that’s required is faith the size of a mustard seed, and repentance that opens the heart to grace. Some theologians have even argued that Hell, while it exists, might be empty. If God is all-knowing, all-loving, and all-powerful, then He is also perfectly efficient. And if the purpose of humanity is to love God with all our heart, mind, and soul and to rest with Him in eternity, then perhaps no one is created who is not ultimately headed toward heaven.
It’s not naïve to hope that Hell is empty. It’s faithful. It’s trusting that mercy wins.
Even the fact that Donald Trump worries about his afterlife, as he’s mentioned more than once, should give us a glimmer of hope. The fear of judgment can be the beginning of wisdom. God understands the complexities of our lives—our traumas, our upbringings, our addictions, and the ways mental illness can cloud our choices. Our free will is not as free as we imagine. Much of what we call sin may be the cry of a wounded soul still waiting to be healed.
And yet, through it all, Christ still extends His hand. He never stops reaching. All that’s asked of us is to take that hand when the time comes—to trust that love can still find us, even in the dark, and to believe that the story isn’t over until every lost sheep is found.
May we have the courage to pray not just for our salvation, but for the salvation of those we struggle to love. Because if grace can reach them, it can surely reach us too.
A Prayer for Every Soul
Loving and merciful God,
You who formed each of us in Your image and breathed life into our lungs,
teach us to see every soul as precious in Your sight.
Remind us that Your mercy is wider than our imagination,
Your patience deeper than our failures,
and Your love stronger than death itself.
We pray for those we find hard to love—
for leaders whose pride blinds them,
for those lost in anger, greed, or fear,
and for all who have wandered far from Your path.
Hold them close, Lord, as You hold us,
for we, too, have been lost and found by Your grace.
When we are tempted to play gatekeeper to heaven,
soften our hearts.
When we think someone is beyond redemption,
show us the wounds in Your hands and remind us why they’re there.
And when our own hearts grow weary,
give us faith the size of a mustard seed—
enough to take Your outstretched hand,
and enough to trust that one day,
all creation will find its rest in You.
Amen.
