Beautiful, true and so helpful! I wish I could print out thousands of copies of this and spread them everywhere. I can’t help believing that people everywhere, having read it in its entirety, would breathe a sigh of relief and whisper “Thank you, Father Rich.”
Thank you, Reidar. If even a handful of people finish reading it, exhale a little, and feel less pressure to have every answer, then it was worth writing. I think a lot of us are carrying burdens God never asked us to carry.
As I grow in my faith, I've learned that this is the whole basis of "faith" - we aren't called to be God, as you said. We are called to do the best we can everywhere we are for the continued building of the kingdom that Jesus started. When I start trying to reason things, that's when I get off the rails. I'm best when I just accept it is all bigger than my understanding and stay with doing the next right thing in front of me.
I think you've put your finger on something deeply important. So much of faith seems to be accepting that God sees the whole picture while we're only responsible for the piece of the path directly in front of us.
Right? I wish I could say it was something I invented! Sometimes life gets overwhelming because we're trying to solve the whole journey at once. Most days, God seems far more interested in the next faithful step than the entire map.

"The next right thing in front of me." I like that.
