The temptation is always to assume we are the wheat and the people driving us insane are the weeds. Conveniently, God keeps refusing to confirm our seating chart. This does not mean tolerating cruelty or confusing mercy with passivity. Protect people, confront harm, set boundaries, and use the courts when necessary. But the moment hatred becomes our method, the weeds have already crossed the property line. The hardest spiritual work is not defeating evil. It is resisting evil without letting it reproduce inside us. Apparently even righteousness requires weed control.
Good evening everyone, quick question. I haven’t received a Message from the Margins since Sunday. Have there been messages today(Tuesday) or yesterday?
Hope all is well with Father Rich and all f you. Maybe I did something wrong with my comments. I hope I didn’t mistakenly unsubscribe. If anyone sees this message, could you please respond to me?
Thank you, Fr Rich for this beautiful homily. Honestly, I have yet to meet a person who didn’t feel that they were surely the wheat…until they really start thinking about it more closely. We are all a bit of both, but every day God gives a new chance to do something good.
One thing that really resonated with me was how to pray for those whom we are sure are the weeds. Instead of concentrating on wanting to see them uprooted, I only recently began praying for those that they have harmed and also praying that God will bring “the wheat” to its senses and that repentance will follow. Praying that way has given me a lot of peace. 🙏
Thank you Father Rich for another beautiful Message today. The Gospels that revolve around the natural world resonate so well for me. As you pointed out, we almost always have a daily challenge to grow like wheat, even in the midst of weeds popping up all over. And yes, the weeds serve a purpose as they help us to grow stronger in our Faith, allowing our roots to take hold as we realize God’s purpose for us, wherever it may lead. I hope you had a lovely Sunday, refreshing you for the week ahead. God bless.
Thank you for this beautiful Sunday homily. It was what I needed to hear today, and I could identify with the points being made. I will reflect and say the prayer when little weeds pop up in my garden.
Beautiful and adds to the mass I unattended where the priest added "don't assume you are not a weed yourself " Sinners all and my self righteousness that my weeds are less aggregious to the Blood of Christ is a stench that comes with my outstretched arms offering praise. But God rich in mercy knows the how and way he will remove my weeds in the field of my heart. Humility is the holy ground pride the rocky ground The furrowing that exposed the rocky soil requires great courage and fortitude to receive it with joy.
Amen 🙏🏼
